Auditory Illusions : Holophonic Sound
update: July 27, 2008 - Mike Costa emailed me tonight with this tidbit.. I thought I’d share the information and link. Thanks to Mike for the 411.
Hey, I just got a Stumble Upon your bog about “holophonic sound” today and though you might be intersted to know that it was more-than-likely recorded with one of these: A Neumann KU 100, two microphones that are essentially a replica of a human head. Now you know!
These super clear audio files are called holophony (holophonic sound recordings) and are designed to be listened to with headphones for the best effect. They have been recorded with a dummy head that has two microphones, one in each ear. The shape of the head and ears are designed to be similar to a human head to most closely replicate real human hearing. It’s pretty incredible.
Grab your headphones and have a listen. While the content itself isn’t that engaging, the sound effects will probably have you listening a second time.

Dead Boss Them! Virtual Barbers Is The Best One Going Though :)
Is There Any Others Apart From Them Three?? :P
This technique has been around for a while, It’s call Binaural recording. -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binaural_recording
Can’s 1976 “Flow Motion” album is really worth a listen.
CAVEAT: I am a big CAN fan, so it’s not an unbiased review ;)
some of the information I’ve found says that this technique isn’t quite the same thing as binaural recording. I can’t really argue the point since I’m not a real audiphile but it’s interesting nonetheless.

Incredible next generation audio files. The mivie studios should jump all over this, so should the music industry…THE NEXT BIG THING in audio!
It is just incredible. My hair was cut just by listening hahaha I saved 50 pesos already…
I feel like I’m sitting at the barber’s chair. I have long hair, but i feel I am bald :)

“Wow, I thought someone was putting a plastic bag on my had.”
I SWEAR I FELT SOMETHING IN MY NECK Dx
Absolutely amazing. Listened to the virtual haircut countless times and it still gives me the chills…
It’s not quite binaural recording. It uses some of the same techniques, but there are differences. Many people believe that binaural is no different from holophonic, but I’ve sure heard a difference!
Amazing
virtual hair cut was the best by far!!!!!!!!the others were bad

amazing v.haircut……………………..
I tried to reach for the matchbox, but it wasn’t there.. :( AMAZING!
wow! that woman’s voice had me giggling and blushing like a little girl
Someone needs to make an algorithm for first person games that can calculate positional sound like these recordings capture. The effect would be even more awesome if you could control the position of your head with respect to the sound sources :-).
oooooooooooo nice
Creepy as hell…wtf
The Matchbox one actually freaked me out a little bit. It sounded like it was right there next to me.
stupidest thing ive ever heard!
OMG…That was ridiculously cool! I loved the Barbershop one too! And thanks to you who posted more links for more of these!! I almost fell asleep to the Thunderstorm one in there….LOL!!
wow. i kept expecting to have someone bump into me, or smell their breath when i closed my eyes. it kind of rattled my nerves for a bit. very impressive.
I have this old Lou Reed live album from the late 80’s that was recorded like this. But I think the term was binaural recording. It was pretty impressive for vinyl.
I liked the match book. I just sort of stared at the comments and got creeped out as it went around.
And for those asking for more there’s alink at the bottom of the post:

If you have a chance listen to the song (-) Ions from the album Aenima of the band Tool.
That was soooo wrong, cuz when the Barber said “in your right ear” it was in my left ear, he had it backwards, soooo wrong. LOL~!

Crazy. I’m sitting here in the dark, and I just got chills when the barber whispered into my left ear. Awesome, awesome stuff.
Watch this late at night when you’re tired. It is eery…

wow…this was just awesome, i thought i was getting a haircut lol. and the girl’s voice was like whoa!…
I like the effects, but nice accent on the barber and his helper. “My mama, she make-sa a nice-a pizza pie. You no like?”
This haircut conversation was really amazing ………
You spelled “auditory” wrong in the title of this webpage; otherwise I love the site!!
Chris
thats crazy. I could smell sulfur when he lit the first match. I had to turn around.
This was the most remarkable thing I have stumpled upon yet! Not since the booth at disneyland have i heard this sort of thing done as well. each one is mad briliant and gave me goosebumps. Many congrats!qtr - T
When the barber whispers in your ear it gives me the creeps! The woman on the other hand, mmmmmmm, could do with a bit more of that.

Wow, someone has invented…panning from the left channel to the right channel. This is going to revolutionize audio. If only Pink Floyd had done stuff like this thirty years ago. Oh, wait… they did. If only Led Zeppelin had done stuff like this on “Whole Lotta Love”. Oh, wait…they did.
*yawn*
Wow… It is really nice.
Queen the rock band did a good exemple of holophony in the song Bicycle :) i heard that song lot of time for that :) if you never heard that song without headphone you missed a great aspect of Queen lol
The woman’s voice is so sexy, I had to listen to it about three times.
Wow.
That seems to be the only way i can describe these audio files. I’ve listened to some but Never something as realistic as this.
Much appreciated whoever posted this.
Amazing!!! I hope all the movies I watch have this effects!
Crazy
Mary Jane Kids! Get it while it’s hot! She should sell smokes (tobacco…).
u shd listen to “Alan’s Psychedelic Breakfast” by Pink Floyd (released in 1970)
There is a sequence of a guy making tea and scrambled eggs and eating his breakfast, all from the perspective of a point in the room, with sounds moving from left-right side as the person moves across the room.
(they pioneered 3-D sounds in music using multiple mics and panning between L&R abt 40 yrs ago)
I am a University English Teacher in Mexico, I asked my students to listen to the “Barber Shop” as an assignment for their listening comprehension practice and they totally loved it!!! Now other teachers that heard about it are using it in their classes.
I would like to have more of these exercises.
its like theres really a barber i coul even feel them!
i was stunned by it i thought i rlly got one
Wow.
That’s phenomenal.
The matchbox one was brilliant. I had my eyes closed and it felt so real.
